Research Questions Week 5 - Teathering

Studio class

Next week I will be going over some tethering options for your cameras/computers and encouraging you capture all your studio work this way.  You will need to find out what tethering software is available for your camera and laptop operating system combination.  Some cameras come with free tethering software, others do not, Lightroom has a tethering function and there are free software packages you can download.

§       What is tethered camera operation?
Tethered camera operation is shooting directly from your camera which is hardwired or uses WIFI to tranfer and display the taken image on your computer. You can then view the image much larger than using the LCD screen on the back of your camera to see how the image will display. Also the image is saved to a designated location on your computer so you don't have to reimport the image.
Shooting tethered with a USB cable to a computer is a good solution if you are working in the studio and want instant feedback on a large screen. The latest update to Canon’s EOS Utility software, version 2.10, adds a new capability. Previously, if you decided to shoot both RAW and JPEG on the camera, it could take a while to send the RAW files along the cable. However, now, you can set EOS Utility to only download the JPEG file, while keeping the RAW file on the memory card. The setting is found in the Remote Shooting settings of the EOS Utility preferences. (http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/tipsandtricks/2562.do?height=320&width=420)

§       What tethering software is available for your camera and computer operating system?
  • Canon EOS Uitility software provided on disc with the camera or downloadable from Canon.
  • Lightroom3 software allows tethering.
  • DSLR Remote Pro for Windows US$175 (http://www.breezesys.com/DSLRRemotePro/features.htm)
  • DSLR Controller (BETA) Chainfire AU$8.27 Full control of Canon EOS DSLR tethered control for phone or tablet through USB. (Android devices) (https://market.android.com/details?id=eu.chainfire.dslrcontroller)
We will have another session on small product photography so I encourage you to bring in a few things you’d like to photograph.  Anything except wholly transparent things or silverware or ‘chromeware’.  I will also brief you on the Studio Assignment 2 – the small product one.  I want to get you started on this work ASAP so have brought forward the starting week for this work.  I will also explore the possibility of studio access outside your class time.  Stay tuned.

Answer these questions on your blog before the week 5 class.  After the class you should return to your blog and correct any wrong information and add a summary of other content covered in class.

This blog becomes your study resource, it can be printed, bound and used to help you in the final test for Technology 2.
